Providence; NY

Don't expect cohesive, coherent thoughts here, it's been a long day after a long weekend and I'm kind of maxed out but still felt compelled to..write about things.

Daughter, is doing well. She's adjusting. She's...a college Freshman, and is experiencing all that entails plus the being an athlete thing, which is a lot.

I'm not sure which of us benefited more from my whirlwind visit, her or me.

I know for sure that my heart filled and I breathed a deep deep breath when we hugged at the airport...she smiled and we hugged and I felt a deep little nagging ache ebb a bit with that.

She's focused...on finishing healing, on exploding as the player she knows she is but hasn't been able to express this last year. She's working hard in hard classes and figuring out how to study..effectively...well..at that level. It's not easy, but we all have to figure it out that Freshman year or sink..and she's a swimmer.

She's dreading the Providence winter, but knows she'll be fine because a. she's young and can handle anything and b. it was her idea to go there so she's not gonna weenie out, period.

The food..sucks. Dorm food..there's a lot of it, and if one is especially discerning one can eat fairly well. Discernment takes energy. Energy takes sleep to generate. She's not sleeping quite enough (homework...etc), ergo she's not always making great food choices.

So, we went to dinner at Mediterraneo again, enjoyed a most amazing dinner of balsamic chicken breasts topped with an arugula salad, fettucine alfredo, fettucine with shrimp. Dessert..cheesecake, yum, and a nutella mousse topped with fresh strawberries. OMG. Very good. Mmmm...

There was a big family dinner after the soccer game on Sunday, a turkey feast to which everyone contributed home cooked dishes...and they were awesome. Sweet potatoes cooked many ways, all good, veggie casseroles, all the good stuff and too many desserts to name. Mmmmm.. The girls were happy, families were together, it was a lovely tribute to the last home game of the year for them.

Daughter borrowed a car from a sweet Senior friend, and took me to the train station so I could begin phase two of the trip..the business part. We shopped a bit in the cool college part of town before she took me, then hugged for a long time before I had to find my way through the maze of the station...

The route from Providence to Penn Station is full of stops...New Haven, Mystic...New Rochelle, etc...and from that experience I decided commuting frequently like that would really suck, but an occasional foray up or back from Providence from/to NYC wouldn't be all that bad in the end. Which is good, because I foresee a good number of those in the coming years...

Now it's all about business and attending the More Magazine Reinvention Convention and being with highly motivated women over 40 of means...who really blew me away and made me proud of who/what I am and realize once more that the power of womanhood, of nurturing our friends and bonding and growing and creating a better world with our considerable energy...is an incredibly worthwhile endeavor..and also, that my baby girl..is one of us..of the women..and I can't wait to help her grow into her considerable self through the decades to come.

Now it's time for meetings...with the PR team, then with the media....which will certainly prove interesting, and I'll do my best to produce fruit.

Peace out for now.

  1. Your daughter is lucky to have you as a loving mother and as a great role model. I'm sure she's an incredible person, just as I'm sure you are.

On Mondays. And lots of rules.

Mondays can be a challenge. There's the whole shock to the system of waking up and realizing it's not the weekend anymore, which kind of blows. And then the jolt out of the lazy flow of the weekend into the time-focused 'gotta be at the office by x time, gotta get ready for the company meeting, gotta check emails/deadlines to ensure nothing is on fire' stuff. And then the reality of settling into the week...and knowing that this one will be a full one. They all seem to be. This week for me: Work. Lots of good stuff going on, but 'lots' being the watchword. School. 2nd trimester starts. Tomorrow a.m. So tomorrow for me is school, 9-12; work 1230-430; clinic 5-9. Long day, Tuesday. For this I've washed and pressed my lab coat, cleaned out my tote (it is truly amazing what collects during a trimester in terms of used kleenexes, abandoned index cards, folded notes that were important at some point but now are just extra weight, stale snacks, etc.), and ...

The run

I have the body of a sprinter, but always ran long distance. My wind would stabilize, my muscles would synchronize, my mind would clear...at about mile 2.5 and just improve after that. For decades I ran. My high school P. E. teacher, Ms. Vidano, instilled the love of the run, and it remains to this day, long past when I should endeavor to tread the roads for miles and miles. The run sustained me after my (very early life) divorce. The run helped reconnect with a childhood friend, who had ventured far for college but returned for work, and who found me enjoying a post-work cigarette and glass of wine on my balcony one night and said, 'Oh, no, this isn't right. Put that fucking thing out. I'll be here in the morning. We're going shopping, and we're going running.' Loved that. He was right, and he was awesome, and he got me back out of a trench and into my running love zone. Then I met my now love, my man of many years, father of my children, partner in ...

It might have been the moon

The second Super Moon, also a Harvest Moon, just happened. On the same night I had my mini-meltdown. (see prior post). I've talked with several friends who reported intense emotions, mostly around stuff that needs to be released, resolved. When I think about my angst, and how intense it felt, I realize it was all about that kind of stuff. Old stuff, patterns, thinking, habits. So maybe the moon precipitated things. The bubbling up of angst and anger and icky stuff lasted all that night, but had calmed by yesterday morning. Thank gawd, because that was a morass of darkness, the likes of which I haven't experienced in at least a decade. The rest of the weekend has been pleasant. Uneventful. Full of errands, chores, a really nice walk this morning, yummy food, naps, etc. The one thing about energy that feels constant is that no mood lasts forever. Energy continually shifts and morphs, like the Universe knows too much, too long, of any one sentiment just isn't a good idea for ...
